28th March 2005 - Race Notes

Assen: Race Notes

Final Summary: Suzuki Castrol 1st, Kawasaki Bolliger 2nd, Kawasaki Diablo 666 3rd, Yamaha Phase One 4th, Yamaha Austria No.7 5th.

Suzuki Castrol made a "splash and dash" fuel stop with just two laps to go, but did not change their rain tyres. Suzuki Nederland were given a Stop-Go penalty, allowing Kawasaki RMT21 up into the top ten. Official race Press Release to follow…

10 laps to go: Will the drying track play a final part in this race? A dry-ish line is beginning to appear on some corners, and Ducati Spring Team have dropped out of the top ten after a minor crash. Yamaha X-One are up to eighth place ahead of Suzuki Nederland, and Yamaha Austria are on the same lap as fourth placed Phase One.

15 laps to go: Suzuki Nederland have made their final stop, losing fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh places in the process. Phase One are back in fourth place, one minute behind Diablo. Yamaha Austria are up to fifth, Fagersjo-el.se sixth and Shell Endurance Academy seventh after rider Wylie pitted due to a misting visor.

20 laps to go: The top three are unchanged but Phase One - who had been catching second placed Diablo - have now been caught and passed by Suzuki Nederland, and Yamaha Austria have moved up to sixth ahead of the Shell Endurance Academy.

30 laps to go: The leading five teams have all made their final stops, unless the track dries out significantly in final thirty laps. Suzuki Castrol are two laps clear in front, the two Kawasakis are a lap apart, and Phase One and the Shell Endurance Academy Yamahas are on the same lap.

40 laps to go: The top seven places remain unchanged, but Yamaha Austria No.7 are up to ninth place and closing on Suzuki Nederland, No.19. The Suzuki's slow pit stops might cost them eighth place. The rain has eased slightly, but the track is still very wet; bikes passing the grandstands are throwing up huge plumes of spray.

50 laps to go: Suzuki Castrol are two laps ahead of second placed Kawasaki Bolliger, with Diablo 666 a lap behind in third place. Yamaha Phase One, Shell Endurance Academy and Fagersjo Suzuki are on the same lap in fourth, fifth and sixth place, and Ducati Spring Team are a lap behind in seventh place. Suzuki Bridgestone Bikers Profi crashed out of the race when the rain began.

Kawasaki Bolliger: Rider David Morillon: "Our bike is very hard to rider, very physical going form full lean to full lean, but I am happy that it is raining." Both the Bolliger Kawasaki and the Diablo Kawasaki seem to be able to stay on track longer than their rivals due to better fuel consumption.

Yamaha Phase One: "Team manger Russell Benney: "Our team has responded well to a number of problems. We've had a misfire and tyre problems on the number 3 bike, but I've sent Marko Rohtlaan back out on the Academy bike (no.6) as he's a demon in the wet.

Yamaha Austria: Team manager Mandy Kainz: "First of all we were split off from Suzuki Castrol by the pace car, then Gwen cashed the No.7 bike, then Saiger crashed the number 77 while he was in second place…" No.77 is out of the race, and No.7 is in 16th place

Suzuki Castrol: Team manager Dominique Meliand: "No problems."

Half Distance: The No.77 Yamaha has also crashed, and is out of the race. Suzuki Castrol are now 1 lap clear of the rest of the field. Second place is held by Bolliger Kawasaki, third by their partner team Diablo 666, fourth by Yamaha Phase One endurance, and fifth by *their* partner team Shell Endurance Academy.Ducati Spring Team are sixth, Suzuki Austria seventh, Suuki Fagersjo-el.se eighth, Yamaha X-One ninth and Team Polytech are tenth.

Heavy rain has started to fall.

Yamaha Austria 7 Crash: Yamaha Austria No.7 pitted after Gwen Giabanni crashed: "I lost the front after a rider in front of me crashed." At around the same time Yamaha Phase One, Suzuki Castrol and Yamaha Austria were expecting to pit, leading to tense moments in pitlane.

First Pit Stops: Suzuki Nederland are one of the first teams to stop, and have lost more time due to using a single filler dump tank; any advantage they have built up slipped away as the team waited for the tank to fill.

Lap 19: Pace Car In, Race On. Suzuki Castrol have pulled 40 seconds clear of second place, with much of the rest of the field being bunched by the pace cars.

Lap 12: The 134 Moto & Co Performance Suzuki has crashed exiting the chicane, leaving the bike on the start-finish straight. The pace cars are out, an ambulance is tending to the rider from pit lane.

Lap 10: Castrol Suzuki's lap times have settled at around 1:25.7, while the chasing teams are in the high 1:26s and low 1:27s. Suzuki Nederland has moved up to third place, while Phase One have slipped behind Bolliger and the Yamaha Austria bike.

Start: Suzuki Castrol were in the lead after the first lap, chased by Yamaha Austria 7 and Yamaha Phase One. The Suzuki Nederlands (19) bike was one of the last away after they had problems getting the engine to fire up, but the most unlucky team was Pajic Kawasaki (111) who crashed leaving the line.

Suzuki Castrol quickly broke away form the chasing pack, with Giabbani on the No.7 bike in pursuit followed by Phase One, Yamaha Austria 77 and Bolliger Kawasaki slipstreaming each other in a fight for third place. Philippe on the Castrol Suzuki was lapping other riders after only 5 laps
